L'Ensemble Intercontemporain

An orchestra in residence

Ensemble Intercontemporain

The Ensemble intercontemporain has been in residence at the Cité de la Musique since 1995, and was created by Pierre Boulez in 1976 with the support of Michel Guy, Secretary of State for Culture at the time.

The ensemble is composed of 31 soloists sharing a passion for music from the 20th century to today. The permanent group participates in broadcasting and transmitting the music of the 20th century and in creating new works.

Directed by Susanna Mälkki, the ensemble cooperates with composers in exploring instrumental techniques and in projects combining music, dance, theatre, cinema, video and plastic arts.

Each year, the Ensemble orders and plays new works enriching its repertoire and which are added to the masterpieces of the 20th century. It performs a dozen times each year in the Cité de la Musique’s concert hall.

Concerts for children, training activities for young instrumentalists, orchestra conductors and composers as well as many public awareness activities reflect the ensemble’s deep and internationally renowned commitment to transmitting music and education.

The Ensemble performs and records in France and abroad where it is invited to participate in major international festivals.

The Ensemble is financed by the Ministry of Culture and Communication and also receives support from the City of Paris.
