The most original aspect of the Cité de la musique project lies in its programming , which covers all musical genres and promotes exchange between Eastern and Western musical cultures, classical music and other so-called popular forms, all set against the major historical periods, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Boasting two halls (one fully modular 1,000-seat hall and a 250-seat amphitheatre), the Cité de la musique hosts some 200 concerts each year, headlining prestigious artists and ensembles from France and abroad.
After ten years in operation, the challenge of opening such a venue has been won: concert programming quickly attracted a large and loyal audience, drawn to the diversity of the musical genres as well as the high level of performers and works presented.
The Cité’s concert hall quickly became a benchmark for the French and international music scene. The average concert attendance rate borders on 90%. The audience is most often young (over 50% of spectators are less than 35 years of age, while the average generally drops See brochures for seasons 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 to 25% in classical music halls). Approximately 150,000 spectators attend the concerts each year.
