Inaugurated 18 January 1997, the Music Museum spans 5 levels to cover 3,000 sq.m of space. Architect Franck Hammoutène showcases the permanent exhibition collections with a play of light and volume using fibre optics. Refurbished in 2009, the museum boasts new exhibition spaces and multimedia tools for a more interactive and comfortable visitor experience (link to press kit/reopening).
Visitors will discover 900 instruments from the Renaissance to the present day as they make their way through music history. In addition to these exhibition spaces, the museum boasts a 230-seat amphitheatre. The baroque organ, constructed by Jean-François Dupont with a buffet designed by Christian de Portzamparc, is played by students of the Conservatoire de Paris and during concerts. The auditorium is also the venue for activities organised by the museum cultural service, such as concerts, films, shows for young audiences and conferences.
