DIAPORAMA : THE MASTERPIECES OF THE MUSEUM

DIAPORAMA : VISIT OF THE MUSEUM

Inaugurated in 1997, the Music Museum is a unique site within the Cité de la musique that harbours a collection of musical instruments, works of art and scale models covering four centuries of the history of Western music and presenting an overview of the main musical cultures throughout the world.

Temporary exhibitions complement this global view of the music tradition and place it in its historical context through a diversity of subjects.

An audio itinerary and daily performances by musicians in the Museum offer the visitor the opportunity to hear some of the instruments on display.
General or thematic guided tours conducted by specialist educational guides address all members of the public and enable a better appreciation of the wealth of the collections and exhibitions.

As a point of convergence between living music and the preservation of historical collections, the Museum’s vocation is also to establish a dialogue between the public, historians, musicians and instrument makers. With this in mind, the seminars, forums and concerts centred on the collections’ instruments carry on the ideas taken up in the exhibitions and are integrated among the major themes that punctuate the life of the Cité. Events organized in the Museum (concert-promenades, storytelling weekend) also enable visitors to appreciate the vivacity and sound of this rich heritage.

The Museum is last but not least a scientific centre dedicated to the study and preservation of our instrumental heritage. It harbours a research and conservation laboratory, while its documentation centre, part of the Media Library of the Cité de la musique, provides access to the latest data from research on ancient and modern instruments.
An accredited Musée de France, the Music Museum performs the role of advisor and expert for other French public collections of musical instruments. It is a founding member of the CIMCIM (International Commission of Musical Instrument Museums and Collections).

Reorganization of the Museum

The Music Museum is undergoing transformations to receive visitors in improved conditions. Supervised by architect Adeline Rispal (Repérages Architectures), the reorganization works concern the rooms currently dedicated to the 17th and 18th centuries.
The new rooms will benefit from a more dynamic presentation, a new audio itinerary and the screening of short documentary films (produced by the Camera Lucida company) placing the works in a wider cultural context. The emphasis will be placed on the diversity of the exchange of ideas and techniques that have influenced the history of music, through the composers, performers and instrument makers that embody it.

After its complete reopening on 3 March 2009, the Museum will enable visitors to discover the new design, accompanied by numerous events.
