The mission of the Musée de la Musique is to conserve, display and make available its collections of musical instruments, paintings, sculpture, drawings and graphic documents, photographs, books and archives.
Conservation primarily involves the management of collections inventories, the preventative conservation of works, the acquisitions policy, and research and documentation on works and their restoration.
To this end, the Musée de la Musique has set up a laboratory working in a range of areas and developing activities of increasing scientific importance. Any work on pieces from the collections is carried out in the lab, which manages restoration for display and conservation, ensures that certain instruments are maintained in playing condition and monitors pieces that have been lent for temporary exhibitions. It is also a centre for research in fields including history, organology, chemistry and the physics of materials.
As part of its scientific and cultural remit, the museum regularly holds colloquiums and study days on research subjects, involving specialist instrument makers, scientists and art historians. The proceedings of these days are published as books by the Cité de la Musique or online
